Used To or Be Used To

There is a great difference between 'used to' and 'used to be'. It refers to meaning and grammatical usage of these phrases. Let's look at both expressions in turn.

'Used to' meaning

Note that we use 'used to' construction with an infinitive after it.

For example 👇

I used to run fast when I was much younger.

'Used to' is used when we want to say that something was true in the past but the situation changed and is no longer true.

For example 👇

I used to smoke a year ago. = Now I don't smoke.

'Used to be' meaning

First of all, note that 'used to be' is used with the -ing form, a noun or a pronoun after it.

For example 👇

'Used to be' is used when we want to say that we are accustomed to or familiar with something new.

For example 👇

I wasn't used to a new bike and my legs hurt after each ride.

He is used to walking in a new park and enjoys it.

There is also a popular expression 'get used to'. It is also followed by the -ing form, a noun or a pronoun. And it's used when we want to talk about the process when we become familiar with something.

For example 👇
